Modeling of Open & Closed Foams

The FoamGeo module creates digital 3D models of regular (Kelvin cells) and random foam structures, based on a statistical description of cell sizes, cell shapes and cell orientations. The regular and random foams can be closed pore foams or open pore foams (sponges).

The digital model is a detailed 3D microstructure of a foam which can be visualized and allows the kind of close analysis only possible from a µCT-scan.

New foams can be designed by changing the underlying statistical description and their material properties can be simulated through computations.
The properties of the new foam can be compared to those of existing products and the foam’s performance optimized for many applications.

Examples of Applications

Modelling of

  • Open cell metal foam
  • Closed cell metal foam
  • Acoustic foams
  • Insulation materials, such as closed cell polyethylene foam

FoamGeo Features

Starting with complex random distributions of cell volume, cell shape, and cell orientation FoamGeo creates digital 3D models of random open cell foams (sponges) or closed cell foams.

Among others, the FoamGeo module can model foams, where the size of the cells changes over the height of the structure, or spatially anisotropic foams. FoamGeo also models regular foams as Kelvin structures.
